I foresee a number of possible issues here. The first and most likely is that the ipad and the Ubuntu system are not on the same network. It is very likely that at least the Ubuntu system is shielded from the outside world and also more than likely the iPad on the wireless is shielded as well. It just won't do these days for important corporate systems to be out their "naked" on the internet.

What this means is that there is a firewall between the iPad and the Ubuntu system. Simply put, the firewall will not let the two talk to each other.

Perhaps the easiest way to see if one can see the other is to find out what the iPad's IP address is and ping it from the Ubuntu system. On the iPad, go to Settings-> WiFi -> (WiFI Network Name) and it will have the IP address.

Now on the Ubuntu, enter ping ip, ip being the address for the iPad. If you cannot ping the iPad, then the firewall is blocking the connection and you will need to see your network admin as to what, if anything, they are willing to allow in.

You should also check the connection to the Ubuntu system via either a ping app from the app store (there are free ones, I think), or via Safari. Just try and access the Ubuntu system via http:// (assuming it is running a web service).

I speak from experience since we have separate wireless and hard line networks here where I work. This is done for computer security reasons.
