KDE and Gnome can run within iSSH without memory issues. Recently,
however, most distributions have pretty graphics-heavy setups for
either and KDE goes pretty much overboard with the eye candy. This
means while KDE runs, it's slow as heck. An upgrade to the X11 server
is coming that'll optimize performance for remote X window managers.
On top of that, the next release will have DWM built it. It's not a
"sexy" window manager but it works well.
