I can easily replicate this with my iPad but not my iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.0. Steps to replicate on my iPad are,

1. Load iSSH
2. Attempt to connect to a server which will refuse the connection (e.g. one which is firewalled from your current location)
3. Display dims ready for password entering
4. Connection denied message appears, clear it
5. Display remains dim but buttons work to allow you to move around iSSH
6. Successfully connecting to another server resets this behaviour resulting in a normal display

Let me know if I can assist further (screenshots, logs etc).
