Ah, but I am using GNU screen. That doesn't mean that I don't want the
connection to be held open in the background when possible, just to make
it easy and fast to return to my incredibly important work and/or gab
session on IRC. I think an option to disable the connection close alert
would be incredibly helpful as modal alerts are inherently annoying. If
Apple actually implemented a sensible notification system ala Android or
WebOS this wouldn't be an issue, but as it stands now I'd like just to
disable it.

To address your concerns, I think the best option would be to make it a
per-connection option, so that I could turn off the alert on connections
that I know are used just for screen.
