Screen uses hardly any resources, unless you leave a heavy task running, or something like top. It's ideal for our needs and I've probably got at least one session running on every one of my servers; managing servers is what I do for a living.

When we're using devices over wifi and 3G, we need to be prepared for the occasional drop out. Even if you don't want backgrounding, screen is an excellent server-side utility.
