In Ubuntu, are you running a a VNC server such as tightvnc ? IIRC, you need
to go into ~/.vnc/ and modify a file to set the environment you want as the
desktop. I believe the name of the file is xstartup or similar.

Once you have done that, you run vncserver and then you should be able to
login.
